Can People See What You Search, Like, or Follow on X? A Field Guide
Can People See What You Search, Like, or Follow on X? A Field Guide
People ask this one action at a time — can they see my searches, my likes, my follows, whether I looked at their profile — and get a different answer each time from a different source.
★There is a single rule underneath all of it, and it predicts every answer:★
If the action sends a signal to another account, it is public. If it only affects what you see, it is private.
Searching changes your results. Liking changes someone else's post. ★That is the whole distinction★, and once you have it you can answer cases this page does not list.
The map
| What you do | Can others see it? |
|---|---|
| Search for something | ★No — never★ |
| View a profile | ★No★ |
| Read a post | ★No★ |
| Bookmark a post | ★No★ |
| Mute someone | ★No★ |
| Block someone | Not announced, but ★detectable★ |
| Like a post | ★Yes★ |
| Follow someone | ★Yes★ |
| Repost or quote | ★Yes★ |
| Reply | ★Yes★ |
| Join a public Community | ★Yes★ |
Read down the column and the rule is visible: ★everything in the "no" group is consumption; everything in the "yes" group touches another account★.
Only the public half is retrievable by anyone, including us — the private half does not exist as data.
The four people ask most
"Can people see what I search?" ★No.★ Searches are private and never attributed to you — not to the accounts you searched for, not to anyone. Your own recent searches are stored for your convenience and you can clear them, but that is a local list, not a public one.
"Can people see what I like?" ★Yes — likes have a public tab.★ This surprises people more than anything else on the list. ⚠️ The likes tab is visible on your profile, and while X restricted programmatic access to liker lists in 2023, the tab itself remains browsable.
"Can people see who I follow?" ★Yes.★ Your following list is public unless your account is protected. ★There is no setting to hide it★ — reading a following list is a normal, public operation.
"Can people see if I viewed their profile?" ★No, and this one has no exceptions.★ X does not collect viewer identity in a retrievable form — the full reasoning.
What "private" actually means here
⚠️ ★Private to other users is not the same as private to the platform.★
Your searches are not shown to other people. They are still processed — that is how results and recommendations work at all. ★The correct mental model is "invisible to other users", not "not recorded anywhere".★
This matters because the two get conflated, and the conflation produces both false comfort and false alarm:
- ★False comfort: "nobody can see it" does not mean "it does not influence anything"★ — your activity shapes your own recommendations
- ★False alarm: "the platform processes it" does not mean your followers can browse it★ — they cannot, and no tool sells them that
★For anyone building on public data, the practical line is simpler: if it is not visible to a logged-out browser, no API returns it.★
That line is exactly where our coverage stops, and it is the same line for every provider.
Checking the public half programmatically
The visible column is all readable, which is what makes audience analysis possible at all:
import requests
BASE = "https://api.socialapi.tech"
KEY = "your_api_key"
HDRS = {"X-API-Key": KEY}
def public_footprint(username):
"""What anyone can see about an account's activity."""
def get(path, **extra):
r = requests.get(f"{BASE}{path}",
params={"username": username, **extra},
headers=HDRS, timeout=60)
r.raise_for_status()
return r.json()["data"]
return {
"following": get("/v1/user/followings", limit=100),
"posts": get("/v1/user/last_tweets", limit=50),
"replies": get("/v1/user/replies", limit=50),
}
★Note what is absent from that function: searches, views, bookmarks, and mutes.★ Not because we chose to leave them out — ★because they are not public data, so no provider has them★.
Questions people ask
Can people see what you search on Twitter? ★No.★ Searches are private and never attributed to you.
Can people see your Twitter searches? No. ★Your recent-search list is local to your account★ — how to clear it.
Can people see what you like on Twitter? ★Yes★ — likes have a public tab on your profile.
Can people see my likes? Yes, by browsing your likes tab. ★This is the answer that surprises people most.★
Can people see who you follow? ★Yes.★ Your following list is public unless the account is protected.
Can you hide who you follow? Only by making the account protected. ★There is no separate setting for it.★
Can people see what you view on Twitter? ★No.★ Viewing is not recorded in any retrievable form.
Can people see when you view their profile? No — the rule behind this.
Can people see if you view their Twitter? No. ★Passive consumption leaves no identifiable trace.★
Can people on Twitter see who viewed their profile? No — not with any tool, at any price. ★The data is not collected in a form that could be served.★
Can people see what you look at on Twitter? No. ★Reading, scrolling, and viewing are all invisible.★
Can people see your bookmarks? ★No — bookmarking is private.★ The author cannot see who bookmarked a post.
Can people see if you muted them? No. ★Muting is invisible by design and undetectable.★
Can people see if you blocked them? Not announced, but it is detectable — how.
Can people see what communities I am in? ★Yes, for public Communities★ — membership is public, which surprises people. How Communities work.
Can people see my drafts? No. ★Unpublished content is not public data.★
Can people see who I blocked? No list is exposed. ★Individual checks are possible; a full list is not.★
Can people see my DMs? No — why no API reads them.
Do people know if I screenshot their post? No. ★X does not detect or report screenshots.★
Can people see if I read their reply? No. ★There are no read receipts on public content.★
Can people see my email or phone? No — ★those are recovery credentials, not public fields★.
Can people see what I unfollowed? Not directly, but ★a follower diff reveals it★ — how tracking works.
Can people see my past usernames? Not from the platform. ★The numeric ID persists, but old handles are not listed★ — why the ID matters.
Is my likes tab public by default? Yes. ★Protecting the account is the only way to restrict it.★
Can I make my following list private? Only by protecting the whole account.
Does searching for someone notify them? ★No.★ Searches are never attributed.
Does viewing a profile repeatedly do anything? Nothing visible to them. ★It may influence your own recommendations.★
Can advertisers see what I search? Not as your identity. ★Targeting works on segments, not on browsable individual histories.★
Is anything I do actually anonymous? ★Consumption is invisible to other users★, while ★every interaction is public★. That is the whole model.
Can a third-party tool see more than a person can? No. ★A tool has the same public access anyone has★ — that is the ceiling.
What is the one rule to remember? ★Consumption is private; interaction is public.★ It predicts every case, including ones not listed here.
The short version
★Consumption is private. Interaction is public.★ Searching, viewing, reading, bookmarking, and muting leave no trace others can see. Liking, following, replying, reposting, and joining public Communities all do.
★The two that catch people out are likes and follows — both are public tabs, and neither has a setting to hide it short of protecting the entire account.★
Our API returns the public half — following lists, posts, replies, and public Community membership — because that is what exists as data. Read-only, flat price per call.
★What no API returns, ours included: searches, views, bookmarks, mutes, and DMs.★ Not a coverage gap — those are the half the platform deliberately does not expose, and that is what makes the public half safe to read.
